November 2007: Cidermill teams up with Red Edge to deliver sales workshops to British Telecom
British Telecommunications plc (BT)
is one of the world's leading providers of communications solutions and services operating
in 170 countries. BT's principal activities networked IT services, local, national and
international telecommunications services, and higher-value broadband and internet
products and services. BT is a wholly-owned subsidiary of BT Group plc and encompasses
virtually all businesses and assets of the BT Group.
With almost 431,800 people employed directly and indirectly by BT in the UK,
the company makes a substantial contribution to the UK national economy. Indeed,
BT activities support almost 1.7 per cent of all employment in the UK, a
considerable contribution for a single company.
BT sells a vast range of telecommunications products and services. Where appropriate
BT offers attractive financial packages to enable customers to pay manageable
amounts quarterly, avoiding the need to make substantial capital outlays at
the start of a project. But BT sales people require special skills to sell
financial services effectively.
BT asked Red Edge
to create a series
of role-play scenarios to help BT sales people develop their financial selling
skills. Red Edge specialises in
developing and delivering role-play training. For BT, Cidermill worked closely with
Red Edge to prepare a set of short scenarios
that enable BT sales people to practise how they present BT's financial services
to customers and prospects. A series of workshops was scheduled throughout
November 2007 at various BT locations in the UK.
Simple 'role-play' exercises are an excellent way to develop inter-personal
skills. People "learn by doing", as well as
picking up useful tips by observing role-playing colleagues. It is far more effective and
certainly more fun than sitting through hours of slide presentations as used in
traditional teaching environments.
With practice, people develop confidence as well as skills. This helps open new
conversations with clients and suppliers.
